His father was a talented engineer, while his mother had distinguished French ancestry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, there was a significant age gap between his parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following Arthur\u2019s birth, the family relocated to Vancouver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After completing high school, he enrolled at the University of British Columbia, where he actively played on the university\u2019s basketball team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon graduating, Arthur married his university friend, Patty Burley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Budding_Investor\"><\/span>A Budding Investor<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During his third year of university, Arthur became captivated by investing. Along with his friend Michael Ryan, he began actively investing in a mining company. Seven years later, according to Arthur, they successfully sold their shares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_New_Venture\"><\/span>A New Venture<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Following this success, Phillips invested in Zero Records, a recording company funded by his father-in-law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the time he reached thirty, Arthur had founded the investment company All-Canadian Fund, which was later sold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Founding_an_Investment_Firm\"><\/span>Founding an Investment Firm<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1964, Arthur, alongside Bob Hager and Rudy North, established the investment firm Phillips, Hager &amp; North.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initially, the firm operated in Eastern Canada, but it eventually grew into the country\u2019s largest investment enterprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_End_of_a_Successful_Marriage\"><\/span>The End of a Successful Marriage<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Arthur and Patty\u2019s marriage lasted twenty years, during which they had five children. However, their family eventually broke apart.
