However, by the summer of 1944, a petition for the construction of a public library was registered in the city. After the war ended, it was decided that the library would be dedicated to the memory of West Vancouver\u2019s fallen soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first library building was opened in 1950, located opposite the Memorial Arch. Architect Robert Berwick donated the project to the community. The construction was funded by over 2,000 local activists, who contributed $18,000, along with business and private donations totaling $40,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The library officially opened on November 11, 1950. Within its first year, it acquired 3,000 books and served 1,800 visitors. The first librarian was Elizabeth Musto. Additionally, the library received a stained glass window featuring a reproduction of Sir Frank Bernard Dicksee\u2019s painting &#8220;Harmony.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Expanding_the_Library\"><\/span>Expanding the Library<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Between 1945 and 1956, Vancouver\u2019s population increased by 5,000 residents, reaching 19,000 people. The library\u2019s collection grew to 25,000 books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"612\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vancouver1.one\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2025\/02\/image-63.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4368\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.vancouver1.one\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2025\/02\/image-63.png 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.vancouver1.one\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2025\/02\/image-63-300x179.png 300w, https:\/\/cdn.vancouver1.one\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2025\/02\/image-63-768x459.png 768w, https:\/\/cdn.vancouver1.one\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2025\/02\/image-63-696x416.png 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1957, the <em>Weekend Magazine<\/em> named West Vancouver Memorial Library &#8220;North America\u2019s Busiest Library&#8221;, featuring it in a photo report. At that time, one in every two city residents held a library card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to high demand, a two-story expansion was approved, covering 5,600 square feet. This new section included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A children\u2019s literature section;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A staff room;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Additional reading space.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The expansion was funded with $44,000 from the city\u2019s budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Second_Expansion\"><\/span>A Second Expansion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By the early 1960s, the population of Vancouver grew by another 6,000 people. According to archival records, 60% of city residents used the library, with students and schoolchildren making up the majority. The book collection expanded to 40,000 volumes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To accommodate growth, an additional 4,200 square feet was added, which enabled:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An enlarged children&#8217;s section;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A reference room;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A music library;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A large reading hall;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dedicated staff offices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The library also introduced free Friday evening concerts featuring live music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By one year after the expansion, the book collection exceeded 60,000 volumes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Construction_of_the_West_and_East_Wings\"><\/span>Construction of the West and East Wings<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By 1970, the library once again faced space shortages due to the rapid growth of the community.
